This morning my view is a simple one. Sitting on a bench in my own back yard, I am surrounded by green. It is a cool and beautiful spot to be on this day where the temperature is expected to reach 100 F. There is a breeze rustling through the twenty trees we have on our small corner lot. The spider wort flowers add specks of purple under the ancient pear tree with its ripening fruit. The lilies are blooming. The heady scent of linden trees fills the air. The ground is a blanket of thick green grass.
As I sit down with my bowl of muesli, Miss Kit-ca the cat bird lands on the arm of the bench and looks right at me. Perhaps she is hoping for a crumb. In a moment she flies across the yard. Digging up a big a fat grub she goes into the snow ball bush. Perhaps she has a nest there. Mr Wayne, her mate, sits on the top of the pear tree & puffs himself up. Miss Kit-ca arrives to flirt with him.
Sarah Jane, our baby wild bunny comes out from under the play house to enjoy her own breakfast of grass and dandelions. Her namesake, my late pet rabbit, loved dandelion too. Birds are singing. One, no doubt, is Kathleen the mocking bird who wakes me up between 4 and 5 am every morning, singing to the dawn. She is convinced that it is her song that makes the sun rise.
……The spell is broken. A loud and low hum has started to emanate from the hospital across the street. A jet roars by. I am starting to feel the heat. The timer is beeping. My first of many loads of laundry is ready to come out of the washer to be hung up on the clothes line. It won’t take long to dry today.
And then it will be time to pack. And bake travel cookies. And see that all is set for The Alice in Wonderland rehearsal I won’t be able to attend next week.
I am glad to have had this moment to share with you. With all the traveling that Mike and I do, with all the amazing views we have seen, with all the people we have met, it is nice to appreciate the little forest oasis, with it’s cute little inhabitants, that is our home.
